Over 18

If you’re over the age of 18, but look under 21, we recommend that it’s a good idea to carry picture ID with you. Anyone who sells tobacco to an underage person may get a heavy fine, so they will be checking everyone who looks under 21, just to be sure.

To prove you’re over 18, the kinds of picture identification you could carry include:

If you are using a proof of age card as a picture ID, make sure it is a ‘PASS’ accreditied card. Look for the ‘PASS’ hologram logo.
Visit the PASS accredited proof of age scheme (new window).

Under 18

If you’re under 18, you need to be aware that shopkeepers and people supervising vending machines won’t sell tobacco to you anymore. Please be considerate and understanding to them, as they could face hefty fines for selling tobacco products to people under the age of 18.

If you want to use this as an opportunity to stop smoking, why not give yourself the best chance and get help from the NHS? You can access a range of support by calling the NHS Smoking Helpline on 0800 169 0 169 or visit gosmokefree.co.uk (new window).

Also, if you’re aged between 12 and 17 did you know you can now be prescribed nicotine gum and patches to help with the cravings? Speak to your local NHS Stop Smoking Service (new window) or ask your GP for more information.
